Background of the Study
Social media platforms have revolutionized communication, with voice notes emerging as a popular medium for sharing messages. In Nigeria, platforms like Instagram and Twitter now offer voice note features that provide an alternative to text-based communication. This study explores how these voice notes influence phonetic perception among Nigerian users. Voice notes capture nuances of pronunciation, intonation, and emotional tone, which are critical for understanding spoken language (Adeniyi, 2023). However, the comparative impact of Instagram versus Twitter voice notes on listeners’ phonetic perception remains underexplored. While Instagram may encourage a more informal, conversational style, Twitter’s voice notes might adhere to different stylistic conventions due to platform culture and character constraints. By analyzing voice note samples and conducting listener surveys, this research aims to assess differences in phonetic clarity, accent perception, and overall communication effectiveness (Chisom, 2024). The study seeks to elucidate the role of social media in shaping phonetic norms and how these digital practices contribute to evolving language perception among diverse Nigerian audiences (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing prevalence of voice notes on social media, little research has focused on their impact on phonetic perception in Nigeria. Most studies have concentrated on textual analysis, neglecting how vocal communication influences language understanding (Adeniyi, 2023). This gap makes it difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of digital voice communication and its potential effects on accent perception and pronunciation norms. Without empirical evidence, stakeholders cannot determine whether these platforms enhance or hinder phonetic clarity. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a comparative analysis of Instagram and Twitter voice notes, offering insights into their influence on phonetic perception and communication efficacy (Chisom, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare phonetic features in Instagram and Twitter voice notes.
  2. To assess listener perception of accent and clarity across platforms.
  3. To evaluate the impact of voice notes on overall communication effectiveness.

Research Questions

  1. How do phonetic features differ between Instagram and Twitter voice notes?
  2. What is the effect on listener perception of accent and clarity?
  3. How do these differences influence communication effectiveness?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of social media voice notes on phonetic perception in Nigeria, offering insights into digital communication trends. The findings will benefit communication scholars, digital content creators, and educators by highlighting how digital vocal practices influence language perception (Adeniyi, 2023; Ibrahim, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to comparing phonetic features in voice notes on Instagram and Twitter and does not extend to other social media platforms.

Definitions of Terms
